General alterations can be done for any type of garment for women, men, and children. This can include, taking garments in or letting them out, and changing the length. These are usually small adjustments that generally make your clothing fit better. These adjustments are based on the design and construction of the garment and the seam allowance that was used when it was originally constructed.
Please keep in mind that there can be limitations with any alteration or repair. You are always advised if the adjustment or repair is practical and possible to achieve your vision.
It is highly suggested that you bring or wear the undergarments and shoes that you plan to wear once the garment is altered.
Pricing depends on the work that is needed to improve the fit according to the way the garment was originally constructed.
Custom Alterations
Custom alterations take years of training and skill building. It focuses on more challenging and structured tasks for garments like modifications to the underlining, padding, interfacing, and more without leaving visible traces. This is not only for custom fitting a garment but for making changes and adjustments to the actual look of the garment. For example, changing a neckline or the sleeve length, adding embellishments by hand, and more.
When redesigning or doing specialty alterations on garments such as wedding gowns, formal gowns, and prom gowns more than one fitting may be required.
Pricing on custom alterations depends on the amount of time it takes to perform the alteration. The original cost of the garment does not factor in. For example, it can take just as much time to shorten a $99 dress, as it does to shorten a similarly styled and constructed $500 dress from a fancy boutique.
Sometimes alterations seem simple and straightforward to the customer, but can actually be more complex because of the way the garment was constructed such as boning sewn into the bodice or lining. We welcome your questions about pricing for altering your garment and will be happy to explain the process.
